Golf Roundup: Woods' stormy round cut short

Tiger Woods finally looked human yesterday at the World Golf Championships-CA Championship at Doral, Fla.

Then came some help from the heavens.

Woods couldn't make a putt, scowled more than he smiled, and was struggling to stay at par in a round when the Blue Monster was yielding birdies. What stopped his slide was a rumble of thunder and a torrential storm that dumped 3 inches of rain and suspended the third round until this morning.

Geoff Ogilvy was at 14-under par through 11 holes and kept his one-shot lead, only now it was Adam Scott on his heels, not the world's No. 1 player who has won every tournament he has played since September.

Woods was at 11 under, even for the day, the only player among the top 18 who was not under par for the round.

Red Wings slam the door in third

As fans filed into Nationwide Arena last night to watch the Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings play for the third time in a week, they were handed nifty Blue Jackets golf visors.

Oh, the symbolism.

After last night's 4-1 loss to the Red Wings, the Blue Jackets are almost certain to be using visors and other such golf equipment in two weeks, when their season ends and the Stanley Cup playoffs begin.

"We have to win out now," coach Ken Hitchcock said, referring to the final seven games. "We know that we have to win out. That's where we're at.

"But the first thing we have to do is address the real situation. We had people today, who, in a big game, didn't play with near the intensity level they're capable of. I really believe some of the players today didn't believe they could win, so they didn't pour it all in."

The Red Wings flexed their muscles early, had their grip on the proceedings slip a bit early in the third period, but then clamped down hard in the closing eight minutes to delight part of a divided crowd of 17,681 and infuriate the rest.

Disc golfers welcome opening of new park

BENTONVILLE - Spirits were high and discs were flying at Lake Bella Vista Saturday for the grand opening of the Lake Bella Vista Disc Golf Course.

About 100 disc golf players and park enthusiasts gathered for the opening and tournament, sponsored by the Twisted Flyer Disc Golf tournament team.

It's the county's first disc golf course, and the nation's newest. The course has been added to the list of 2, 500 Professional Disc Golf Association courses across the nation.

The course came as the result of a donation from the National Golf Association, which donated a portion of proceeds from the 2007 Hooters Tour / Bentonville Open for the course. The donation came out of a promise from the organization to give a portion of its proceeds back to the community, and the project was suggested by Bentonville Convention and Visitors Bureau President Kalene Griffith.
