Harbor Town tops list

For the fourth time in as many years, Hilton Head Island's Harbour Town Golf Links has been selected as the top golf course in South Carolina by the S.C. Golf Course Ratings Panel.

Co-designed by Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus in 1969, Harbour Town beat out Tom Fazio's Sage Valley Golf Club near Graniteville. No. 3 in the annual ratings is Kiawah Island's Ocean Course.

Nine courses from last year remained in the top 10, though six moved up or down in the rankings. Beaufort's Secession Golf Club, No. 9, is the only new entry after being No. 11 last year.

The rest of the top 10: No. 4, Bluffton's May River Club at Palmetto Bluff; No. 5, Hilton Head's Long Cove Club; No. 6, Greenville's Chanticleer Course at Greenville Country Club; No. 7, Myrtle Beach's Dunes Golf and Beach Club; No.

Golf tourney, auction aim to benefit school

CHINO HILLS - Athletes and advocates will demonstrate their support of children's education by participating in a golf tournament and auction April 4 at Los Serranos Golf and Country Club.

The entry deadline is March 31.

The event, which begins with registration at 11 a.m., is a fundraiser for Country Springs Elementary School. All proceeds benefit supplemental teaching supplies, programs, educational assemblies, field trips and other student services at the Chino Hills school.

The $150 single-player and $500 foursome fees include golfing, a golf cart, lunch at noon, a gift bag, an awards dinner and an auction. The shotgun start is at 1 p.m. After the 5p.m. awards dinner, there will be a silent auction.

Additionally, sponsorships are sought for the tournament, dinner, table, refreshment cart and other expenses relating to the fundraiser.

Bakery moving; mini golf coming

Main Street is getting another restaurant, although at the expense of Fourth Street.

Owner Al Gendek reports that his Diamond Delights Bakery is moving to 115 N. Main St. (formerly the location of Earth Magic, which has moved up to North Green Street beside Dairy Queen). And in doing so, Diamond Delights will change its focus to emphasize meals.
